GLOBES to hold fall reception

By on September 25, 1997

To find food, drinks and conver-
sation with the mayor, go to
GLOBES (Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual
Employees and Supporters) third
annual Fall Reception tonight.

The reception, which will be held
at the Globe bar downtown, will
include speakers and representa-
tives from the Lesbian, Gay and
Bisexual Student Union, who is co-
sponsoring the event.

The AIDS Coalition of Northeast
Georgia and the Lesbian and Gay
Professional Society of Athens will
also be there.

Special guest Mayor Gwen
O’Looney will speak and give an
official greeting at the reception.

The event was designed to cre-
ate opportunities to meet new
friends, see old friends and connect
with the community, organizers
said.

Annette Hatton, who founded
GLOBES more than three years
ago, said it’s important for "people
to know that they don’t have to be
gay, lesbian or bisexual to attend,
they can just be straight support-
ers."

She said GLOBES was created
to meet the needs of University
staff, faculty and graduate stu-
dents. All students are welcome.

"We try to get changes made at
the University to make it more gay-
friendly," Hatton said. "The envi-
ronment needs to be improved to
help people be out in the open."
