“I’m gonna get me a shotgun and shoot all the whities I see.”
- Garrett Morris, “Saturday Night Live.” Don’t forget to celebrate Black History Month.
40 WATT CLUB (549-7871)
· Friday: Soul Miner’s Daughter/ Spike The Dog. You should know the story by now. Friends since meeting in a grade-school performance troupe. They go to college. Cory Jones graduates from the University and Jennifer Nettles from Agnes Scott in Decatur. Agnes Scott is, of course, where “Scream 2″ was filmed. And the 40 Watt will host a few screams of its own with the intense vocals of Nettles, the closest thing to Janis Joplin you’ll ever hear live. Dual-action acoustic rock is what you’ll find at the 40 Watt tonight.
· Saturday: Star Room Boys/The Steam Donkeys/Lilybandits/Greta Lee. Star Room Boys: country music sound without all that country music nausea.
· Monday: G. Love & Special Sauce/Jasper/First Born. If anyone sees G. Love or any of his Special Sauce, please thank him for calling Red and Black staff writer Beth Haggerty. The G-man finally came through after many moons of enough long-distance calls to cause Red and Black publisher Harry Montevideo to make some special sauce of his own (in a barf bag). Look forward to an interview with Mr. Love in Monday’s edition of La Rojo y Negro (The Red and Black, for you non-espanolers).
· Tuesday: Dime Bag/Wide Receivers/Le Guano. The Wide Receivers and the quarterbacks are looking for a coach since the oh wait a second, this is the band, not the Bulldog football team. Never mind.
· Thursday: King Kong. You don’t get no monkeys, but instead plenty of ska-funk-pop-lounge and a song about shooting three-pointers. Fun for everyone from the Copenhagen-based band whose Web site had, at last count, 19 hits. This newspaper’s recently opened Web site, by comparison, had 3,000 hits on its first day and more than 11,000 in a week. If you visit our Web site (www.redandblack.com) you can see a picture of me, Daniel Pulliam, entertainment editor, at my geeky-looking best. This photo, unfortunately, drew a lot of comparisons to Timothy McVeigh, which I am only now recovering.
