Lott initiates transfer process to Georgia State
Women’s basketball player Dianna Lott, who played in all 28 games last season, plans to transfer from Georgia next year to play for the Georgia State Panthers.
The decision comes after a statement was released April 15 that said Lott had been "suspended indefinitely due to repeated violations of team policy."
"I’m transferring to Georgia State," told The Red and Black. "I haven’t signed or anything yet, but I plan to."
Head coach Andy Landers said the decision to remove Lott from the team permanently came a short time after the statement was released.
"It’s official," Lott said. "I’m off the team for good."
Martin Harmon, director of sports information for Georgia State University, confirmed Friday that Lott has requested a chance to visit the Georgia State program.
Hoke Wilder, associate athletic director in charge of compliance for Georgia, also confirmed that Georgia had received a letter from Georgia State regarding the 6-foot-3 inch sophomore.
"We have received an inquiry," Wilder said.
Wilder said the letter was part of standard NCAA transfer process.
"When a student initiates a transfer, the gaining institution must go to the current certified institution and ask certain questions. Can they communicate with the individual, and their eligibility and current academic status."
Lott, who averaged 8.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game last season, had been suspended twice previously for other violations. She faced a two-game suspension during her freshman year for violations of academic policy, forcing the player to miss Dec. 4′s home opener against Virginia and a game against Tennessee on Dec. 8. After showing up late for a shoot-around on Jan. 27 of the same season, Lott served a one-game suspension for that night’s game. Ironically, Lott was forced to sit out while the Bulldogs played the same school to which Lott intends to transfer: Georgia State.
Although Lott did not appear overly excited about the transfer, she did say that she has friends at Georgia State.
"Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do," Lott said. "But I think it will work out for everybody."
Landers said he was anxious for next season despite Lott’s transfer.
"I think we’re fine," he said. "We’ve got a good recruiting class and a good corp of players with a year’s experience. I regret it for Dianna, but as far as our program goes, I think we’ll be fine."
