2 arrests made in fake parking permit case
Two University students were arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with a scheme to counterfeit temporary parking permits.
Arrest warrants were issued Wednesday after University Police received a report from University Parking Services of counterfeit permits being used on campus.
Todd Folley and James Drew IV, both 23 and from Augusta, were arrested and charged with felony first-degree forgery and theft of services, with maximum penalties of up to 11 years in prison. Drew also was charged with felony entering auto, which has a penalty of up to five years.
Drew was accused by police of breaking into a vehicle and stealing a temporary parking permit in order to produce counterfeit permits with Folley.
Police said Folley and Drew gave fake permits to five other students, all from the Augusta area.
All five have been charged with theft of services but have not been arrested: Kerry Alt, 20, Carter Garrett, 20, Amanda Olliff, 20, Michael Collins, 22, and Thomas Welsh, 21.
Attempts to contact all seven of the students by telephone Thursday went unanswered.
Police said Wednesday only a few of the permits were made, and they were poorly done.
Jo Carol Nesset-Sale, with the University’s Legal Aid and Defender Clinic, said there is a lesson to be learned in this case.
"This is certainly an example of what seemingly might be simple when viewed through the eyes of a student but can potentially cause serious harm when viewed through the eyes of the court," Nesset-Sale said.
Parking Services workers became aware of the scam when they called in the number of one of the counterfeit temporary permits, said Mike Sproston, assistant Parking Services manager.
Parking Services then discovered that the original permit had been issued in 1996, he said. Drew was released on $16,500 bond Thursday, and Folley was released on $6,500 bond.
