Classic Center events celebrate the 50th anniversary of Israel
An entire Israeli marketplace of belly dancing, jazz music, folk dancers, food and crafts will arrive at the Classic Center on Sunday to celebrate Israel’s 50th anniversary.
Simcha! – Hebrew for "joyous occasion" – celebrates the 50th year since the founding of the state of Israel.
"Israel has come such a long way," said Tammy Gerson, co-chair of the event. "Israel has been a leader for 50 years in that part of the world, and that’s a reason to celebrate."
Although most of the festivities will highlight the modernity and culture of Israel, Kashmira the belly dancer will perform to keep the flavor of the Middle East, Gerson said.
"Belly dancing is an old form of entertainment," Gerson said. "Dancing is an art form there, and we want to bring the whole picture to Athens."
Athens-Clarke County Mayor Gwen O’Looney will proclaim Sunday "Israel Day."
One area will display some of Israel’s religions, including the Greek Orthodox Church, Baha’i and Judaism.
An Israeli tour guide will speak on its history. Two baby camels will be there, and a 5K race will start at the Classic Center at 12:30.
Simcha! will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Classic Center. Admission is free.
