Dogs drown SMU
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams held on to their perfect dual swim meet records on Saturday, as both teams rolled past Southern Methodist University.
Avenging their only loss in three years, the top-ranked Lady Bulldogs squeaked past SMU with a score of 130-120, while the seventh ranked men defeated SMU 157-97.
"I’m not sure we would have gone this fast if we had been racing anyone other than SMU," said head coach Jack Bauerle. "They really pushed us. All we asked of our team was that they race hard and they certainly did that. Both teams really stood up and raced."
Despite a few injuries, the Lady Bulldogs had an unexpectedly good day coming back from the holiday break. The women kicked off the meet with a provisional qualifying mark of 1 minute 52.76 seconds in the 200-meter medley relay.
Taking home first place in two events, junior Kim Black won the 200-meter free with a time of 1 minute 59.41 seconds and the 400-meter free with a time of 4 minutes 12.15 seconds.
Clocking in the best time of her season, Courtney Shealy swam a 25.09-second 50-meter freestyle.
"As a team, we competed really well; we are definitely headed in the right direction," said Shealy, a senior from Columbia, S.C. "When we get everyone back, we will be a team to be reckoned with."
The seventh ranked men’s team soundly defeated SMU, with magnificent performances from senior co-captain Beau Wiebel, Marc Lindsay, Jim Sellars and Chris Murray.
After helping his team take home first place in the 200-meter medley relay, Murray also finished first in the 50-meter free with his fastest time of 22.55 seconds.
"It all comes down to who is going to do their best when they are tired," said Murray. "We have been training very hard."
The Bulldogs’ next action will come Friday as they face No. 2 Arizona.
Georgia Diving Invitational
As the holiday break came to a close for the Bulldogs, the diving team competed in the Georgia Diving Invitational this past weekend at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The injury-ridden women’s team struggled to make the cut. Despite hurting, Dana Nufrio, a sophomore from Watkinsville, placed 12th in the 1-meter finals.
"It’s been difficult to compete because of a knee injury," said Nufrio. "I am trying to be as positive as possible."
A healthier men’s team placed higher in the tournament. In the 3-meter finals, Jud Campbell placed fourth, while Trey Hart finished fifth.
In the 1-meter finals, Jud Campbell took home second place. Trey Hart finished third and Kris Daugherty came in fourth.
"I thought we competed well," said head diving coach Dan Laak. "To have all three of our guys in the finals after a tough Christmas training is promising."
