Georgia makes advances in recruiting
This past weekend was a successful one for the Bulldogs, picking up three more verbal commitments and and a soft commitment from one of the top offensive linemen in the nation.
On a weekend in which 15 prospects visited, the Bulldogs strengthened their defense by picking up commitments from Chris and Nick Clemons, two brothers from Griffin.
Chris, a 6’3", 215-pound linebacker, and Nick, a 6’6" 250-pound defensive lineman are nephews of former Bulldog linebacker and 1993 graduate Charlie Clemons.
The Bulldogs also received a commitment from another quarterback in addition to David Greene, the local boy from South Gwinnett.. Matt Redding of Madison, Fla., told the Bulldogs yesterday that he plans to enroll at the University in the spring.
Most importantly, though, it looks as if Jim Donnan and new assistant offensive line coach Doug Marrone impressed Jason Respert of Warner Robins, one of the nation’s top line prospects.
It was believed that Tennessee was the leader for Respert, but as he told Jamie Newberg of Borderwars.com, "My visit to (the University) was awesome. I love Coach Marrone. He’s the man and coach I thought he was."
Commitments previous to the new year for the Bulldogs include two top notch running backs, Albert Hollis from Sacramento, Calif., and Musa Smith from Elliotsburg, Penn. On defense, Rod Davis, a safety from Rockdale County, committed early to the University, and many recruiting experts believe he can mature into a linebacker in college.
Also, two signees from last year who failed to qualify plan to take the field next season in Athens. Jon Sullivan, a 6’4", 270-pound offensive lineman from Griffin spent the last year at Hargrave Military Academy preparing for the Southeastern Conference grind. Reggie Brown, last year’s top wide receiver prospect, is already enrolled in spring classes at the University.
By signing day, the Bulldogs should have a better picture. Tight end prospects Andre Zellner and Jay Ratliff are rumored to be leaning towards the University, and the Bulldogs still await visits from them in addition to offensive lineman Justin Smiley and defensive back Rodney Mars. Running back Reshard Lee is also
strongly considering the Bulldogs.
From now until Jan. 28, many top prospects will continue to visit the University. In both official and unofficial visits, the Bulldogs will continue to pursue prospects who are still undecided or have already committed to other schools.
If Donnan and Marrone can follow up the next two weeks as well as they did the past one, it looks as if the Bulldogs will bring in one of the top classes in the South — if not the nation.
