Possible hazing examined

By on October 6, 2000

University police still are investigating a possible hazing incident after they responded to a complaint about two individuals sitting blindfolded in the cargo area of a silver sport utility vehicle Tuesday.

University police officers stopped the vehicle at 9:12 p.m. on South Milledge Avenue and interviewed all occupants.

According to the police report, the men in the SUV said they were headed to an induction ceremony for an honors society.

The individuals said they were voluntarily blindfolded and had not been harmed in any way, according to the report.

‘We were told one story at the scene, but we’re still investigating,’ said University Police Chief Chuck Horton. ‘The members of the vehicle were from different fraternities and were headed toward some sort of secret initiation ceremony.’

Horton would not release the names of the individuals or their fraternities because the incident still is under investigation.

‘Regardless of any criminal charges, University judiciary will still get this case,’ Horton said.

‘Nobody was in danger, but I’m not saying it is safe to ride unbelted in a cargo area,’ he said.

Officials in the Greek Life Office said they are waiting for the University police and the student judiciary to complete their investigations before taking any action.

‘There are some secret societies on campus that I don’t know anything about,’ said Eric Atkinson, assistant coordinator of Greek Life. ‘We’re taking this very seriously.’

Sanctions more likely would be brought against the individuals involved in the incident rather than disciplining entire fraternity chapters, Atkinson said.

‘We’ve had continuing education on (hazing),’ Atkinson said. ‘It’s a societal issue and a University community issue we need to look into.’

The Greek Life Office issued a University Compliance Form at the beginning of the semester. All members of fraternities and sororities were required to sign the form pledging they would not participate in any hazing activities.

No representatives from the University Judiciary were available for comment at press time.
