Student punished for ‘immature pranks’
A student judiciary panel found a University student in violation of five conduct regulations — including illegal entry into a residence hall and harassment — following a Sept. 28 hearing.
Jed Lawrence, a junior from Marietta, was placed on University probation and permanently expelled from Housing because of his actions.
He also must complete 30 hours of community service and write a letter to University Housing stating why his actions were inappropriate.
Lawrence said he thought all of the punishments besides probation were appropriate.
"Probated expulsion is a little too harsh for what I did," he said. "It just seems like they blew this whole thing out of proportion."
According to an Oct. 3 letter from the panel to Lawrence, Lawrence had "infringed upon the rights of another student" when he harassed Ashley Harden, a graduate student from Ormand Beach, Fla., approximately a dozen times, as well as several other students.
Harden testified Lawrence loudly knocked and pounded on his Oglethorpe House room April 3, prompting Harden to fear for his safety and chase after Lawrence with a walking stick.
In going to the dorm that night, Lawrence illegally entered the building because he was suspended from Oglethorpe for prior judiciary offenses.
"Your immature pranks and illegal entry into University Housing affects the entire University Community," the panel said, regarding Lawrence’s behavior. "It is our hope through these sanctions that you will understand how your behavior seriously affected the specific students involved in this case."
In retrospect, Lawrence said he has regrets.
"I wish that I hadn’t gotten in so much trouble," he said. "I plan to stay off-campus from now on."
Lawrence also said he plans to accept the decision rather than appeal it, which he is allowed to do within three days.
