Dawg Trak aids in search for student-friendly jobs

By on March 29, 2002

For students looking for jobs with flexible hours and chances for promotion not far from home, the University offers campus jobs.

To find out about jobs available on campus, students must first complete a personal profile online on Dawg Trak, said Ronnie Swoopes, manager of Student Employment Services and a career consultant at Clark Howell Hall.

Dawg Trak is a Web site that informs students about jobs available on campus and in the Athens area.

Once a student is registered on Dawg Trak, he will be able to access information 24 hours a day about employment opportunities on campus. Currently, there are about a dozen positions posted on Dawg Trak, Swoopes said.

Dawg Trak gives a description of the position, the qualifications needed and information about applying for the position.

There are about 300 work-study students and about 2,500 student workers on campus, Swoopes said.

“I don’t think a lot of students are aware we have these kind of jobs available,” he said.

“I love my job,” said Molly Hale, a junior from Cleveland, who works in the Franklin College Residence Halls.

She said she routinely answers phones, makes appointments and does other small tasks for the advisers, whose offices are located at Brumby, Russell and Creswell halls.

“They work around your schedule for school. If you have activities, they work around them,” Hale said.

There are many benefits to on-campus jobs besides the pay, which ranges from minimum wage to $10 an hour, Swoopes said.

“(On-campus employment) allows students to enhance work-related skills. Also, it has been shown in studies that students who work are able to retain more information,” he said.

On-campus jobs range from employment with Food Services, Campus Transit, University Computing and Networking Services, the University’s libraries and offices around campus.

There also are opportunities to receive raises in on-campus employment, Swoopes said.

“Raises are associated with a student’s longevity in a particular job,” he said.

“The opportunities present at UGA (for student employment) enhance your overall educational experience, which makes you more marketable to potential employers,” he said.

Available off-campus positions are posted on Dawg Trak by residents of Athens who contact Student Employment Services.
