Lady Diamond Dogs reamed by Gamecocks

By on April 11, 2002

South Carolina continues to have No. 23 Georgia’s number in Columbia as the Gamecocks swept a doubleheader against the Lady Diamond Dogs Wednesday, winning 4-3 and 2-1.

With the wins, South Carolina (31-11, 12-5 SEC) continues to lead the SEC East over the Lady Dogs (42-10, 10-10 SEC).

In the first game, Georgia scored first as Julie Milner came through with a sac fly that scored Nicole Barber in the fourth inning.

South Carolina came back in the bottom half of the inning, though, putting two runs on the board. The Gamecocks’ first run came on a Georgia error while their second run came on a two-out, run-scoring single.

Down 4-3 in the seventh, the Lady Dogs had runners on second and third with no outs. Amy Brannan was thrown out at the plate on a squeeze attempt and Milner struck out to end the game.

Lacey Gardner (18-6) took the loss from the mound. She pitched six innings and had two strikeouts in the game. Megan Matthews (16-4) got the win for the Gamecocks.

In game two, the same theme was present as the Lady Dogs again scored first. In the bottom of the third, Barber scored after being walked. She moved to second and third on a sacrifice and fielder’s choice respectively and got to the plate on an infield error.

As in game one, South Carolina came back in its half of the inning to put a run on the board. With the game in a 1-1 tie, the Gamecocks took advantage of a hit and wild pitches to take the lead for good in the fourth inning.

Again, in the top of the seventh, the Lady Dogs managed to get things going for themselves before giving up the final out. Aleca Johnson, who received the save in game one, got the first two Georgia batters out before Barber ripped a single to center field.

Katie Lewis couldn’t keep the momentum though, as she grounded out to end the game.

Georgia and South Carolina square off again today in the third and final game of the series. The game is again at 5 p.m. in Columbia and all stats will be kept live on (www.georgiadogs.com).
