Underground acts surface on the Yard
Hip-hop and Herty Field — two things that don’t usually come up in the same sentence.
Yet, from 8 to 11 tonight The Dreaded Mindz Family will be sponsoring Hip-Hop on the Yard, featuring local and national hip-hop acts, as well as poets, DJs, MCs, break dancers, capoeira crew and other dancers.
The Dreaded Mindz Family is a student organization devoted to promoting diversity, said Montu Miller, head of the 5th Element Division of the Dreaded Mindz Family.
“(Dreaded Mindz) is an organization that believes in promoting self-expression,” he said.
Millers said Athens has a thriving underground hip-hop scene that goes largely unnoticed.

“The underground is sizzling right now,” he said. “There’s so much talent right here, so we just wanted to show people that there are great hip-hop artists. Just like all the other genres, we’re gonna show that Athens has hip-hop acts coming through too.”
Herty Field was chosen to bring a new element to the former University football field, Miller said.
“We really wanted to get that spring outside feel,” he said. “Herty Field was the first place that UGA football was played, but now it’s gonna be the first time that there’s gonna be a good hip- hop show there.”
Herty Field will feature a main stage with eight different artists, such as Adoniz B., Ishues and Godly Poets, amongst others, Miller said.
Hip-Hop on the Yard will feature tables from The Green Party and Amnesty International, and the last part of the show will be devoted to an open mic. The event’s planners hope to give everyone a chance to voice their opinion, Miller said.
“We’re trying to promote a communal vibe because that’s what it’s all about,” he said.
