After a disappointing season-opening loss to No. 4 Texas, Georgia will look to get back on the winning track when it takes on the EA Sports All-Stars at Stegeman Coliseum tonight at 7.

The No. 16 Bulldogs (0-1) showed some promise Friday night in the 77-71 loss to the Longhorns as Georgia led for a good part of the game without its two big inside players.

“I thought we played really good,” Georgia head coach Jim Harrick told WNGC-FM after the game. “We’ll be fine. We need to get (Chris) Daniels and (Steve) Thomas back.”

Daniels and Thomas weren’t allowed to play for Georgia because of suspension. Daniels played in a game this summer that wasn’t sanctioned by the NCAA and Thomas is academically ineligible for the fall semester.

Georgia shot just 26.5 percent from the floor in the second half and on the night, hit just 17-of-297 free throws.

“We were up 10 and then we missed four real easy shots,” Harrick said. “We missed some foul shots, and we’re a good foul shooting team.”

Junior forward Jarvis Hayes scored eight points on 4-of-13 shooting while his twin brother Jonas scored seven points on 4-of-7 shooting before fouling out of the game.

Texas sophomore guard T.J. Ford was simply too much for the Bulldogs.

Ford scored 22 points and had eight assists against Georgia.

“Ford controlled the game,” Harrick said.

With the Bulldogs leading by 10 with 17:44 to go in the second half, the Longhorns ripped off a 21-4 run, firmly placing them in the lead.

Georgia pulled to within two points with 55 seconds left but couldn’t retake the lead.

Down 71-66, junior guard Rashad Wright hit a three-point shot to make it a one possession game.

T.J. Ford then hit a layup with 29 seconds left to push the lead back to four.

On Georgia’s next possession, Wright was fouled. He hit two foul shots to again pull within two, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get at the end of the game.

Junior Texas guard Brandon Mouton hit four clutch foul shots in a row to give the Longhorns the final points in their 77-71 win.

Senior guard Ezra Williams led Georgia with 20 points, junior guard/forward Damien Wilkins had 16 points and Wright had 15 points for the Bulldogs.
