Homecoming has ‘legendary’ theme
Freshly painted streets, returning alumni and a spot- light concert featuring Busta Rhymes will commemorate Homecoming this week.
Matt Wilson, a sophomore from Griffin, is this year’s Dawg Rally coordinator for the Homecoming committee.
Wilson said this year’s theme, “Where Legends Are Made,” was chosen to celebrate famous Georgia legends ranging from Uga to football players clad in silver britches.
According to the Homecoming Web site (www.uga.edu/Homecoming), each student organization has chosen a particular legend to represent in the banner competition, parade and street painting.
Ginny Barton, vice president for the Student Government Association and a senior from Chapin, S.C., said SGA chose the theme of tailgating.
Barton said SGA painted a picture of a bulldog with a barbecue apron standing next to a grill with a dragon — the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s mascot — cooking.
The painting’s phrase reads: “Where Legends are made and Dragons Filleted.”
Jill Trawick, program advisor for the Homecoming Committee, said she estimates 70 student organizations are involved in this year’s festivities.
The rest of this week’s events include the Brumby Beach Bash and Taste of Athens held today from 4 to 7 p.m.
On Thursday, a Dawg Rally will be held on Legion Field from 8 to 9 p.m.
Wilson described the event as an “eclectic portrayal of school spirit including step teams and performance groups.”
He said the pep rally will feature nine varsity teams including members of the Gym Dogs and the men’s basketball team and football team.
Wilson said the rally also will introduce the Homecoming Court.
The King and Queen will be announced during Saturday’s game against UAB.
Homecoming celebrations will continue on Friday with the parade downtown at 6:30 p.m.
Busta Rhymes will perform with special guest Blackalicious at 8 p.m. Friday at Stegeman Coliseum.
