Five Star serves up soul

By on October 28, 2003

Editor’s Note: The following is a mock screenplay from “High Fidelity,” starring John Cusack as Rob and Todd Louiso as Dick.

Scene: Inside Championship Vinyl

ROB: So where’d you go for lunch, Dick? You were gone for almost two hours…

DICK: Well, I spent about half an hour eating at this crappy Italian place, and then I spent the rest of the time lamenting the fact that I don’t live in Athens, Ga.

ROB: Athens? What’s in Athens? Is this some sort of R.E.M. thing?

DICK: No, no it’s nothing like that. I was visiting a friend in Athens a week ago, and she took me to this gourmet soul restaurant called Five Star Day Cafe.

ROB: “Gourmet soul?” Oh, no. It’s not one of those places where they just take comfort food and sprinkle basil on it and call it “gourmet” is it?

DICK: Listen, I know that’s what it sounds like, but it really is so much more.

ROB [half paying attention]: Hmm.

DICK: The restaurant just seems to have this seductive whimsy to it that I can’t stop thinking of — they’ve even got a Kool-Aid of the day.

ROB: I’m listening.

DICK: As one of the appetizers, they have black bean cakes laid over a bed of salsa and topped with cilantro sour cream. They’re really good.

As far as entrees go, it’s almost impossible to go wrong; every entree comes with a cornbread muffin that might as well be a little nugget of happiness.

The highlight is the stuffed meatloaf, which is a homemade meatloaf stuffed with mushrooms and homemade mozzarella.

ROB: What else do they have?

DICK: I was hard-pressed to find a snack around downtown Athens that filled me up as well as Five Star’s Garden of Eatin’ entree at five bucks.

For $5, you get your choice of three freshly prepared vegetables. That means you can choose from the soup of the day, mashed potatoes, some amazing macaroni and cheese, the black bean cake and an assortment of other delectable veggie goodies.

ROB: Well that sounds nice, but what makes it different from the rest of those “gourmet soul” joints?

DICK: They have such a subtle touch with food. It’s like a delicious international time machine for my stomach. It reminds me of home.

[Barry enters the store.]

BARRY: Dude, I know that look. Are you getting all analytical on Five Star again? You’re thinking too much; just get that pot roast and chow down.
