Sugar Bowl ring found on eBay
The saga of “Ring-Gate” has returned.
The Sugar Bowl championship ring belonging to Georgia senior receiver Reggie Brown surfaced on the Internet auction site eBay Thursday, with a high bid of more than $2,025 Thursday evening.
An individual from Dallas, Ga., was listed as the seller.
Brown, whose eligibility remains intact, will play against Tennessee Saturday.
“I’ve already disciplined him the way I disciplined the others,” said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. “I’ve known about this for quite some time.”
Brown was unavailable for comment Thursday, as no Georgia players are available for comment after Thursday practices on game weeks.
In spring 2003, nine Georgia players were found to have sold their SEC Championship and Sugar Bowl rings on eBay.
“His fell through the cracks the last time around,” Richt said. “His happened at the same time everybody else’s happened.”
After the University declared the players ineligible, the NCAA restored their eligibility, citing a lack of precedent.
Now, players selling their rings are subject to at least a one-game suspension, Richt said.
In addition, any players awarded rings are required to sign a form stating they will not sell their championship rings.
Brown was not among the nine players originally cited but was given the same internal punishment before the 2003 season.
As part of that punishment, Richt said, players who sold their rings have to buy them back from the athletic department after they leave the University.
Another part of the punishment requires the players to pay $300 for the rings awarded to them in the first place.
