Classic film night promotes safety
In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, Safe Campuses Now and Advocating Safe Alternatives for Peers are joining to promote dating safety tonight at an ’80s themed movie party.
“In light of the recent news, students need a light-hearted way to learn,” said Keith Sims, executive director of Safe Campuses Now. “It’s education for fun.”

Although the movie night primarily targets women, Sims said she hopes men will come out – even if it is just in the hope of being around women.
She said the organization, although known for its women’s self-defense classes, is not a “she-women-man-haters club.”
In fact, the only male involved with the collaborative event decided on the “Chick Flick” name.
At the program, attendees will see a presentation on dating and alcohol safety before watching the film “Pretty in Pink.” And students will receive goody bags of condoms, candy and information about date rape and alcohol safety.
Although both organizations share similar goals of crime awareness, prevention and education, they have never before planned an event together.
Sims said they hope to collaborate again for a similar safe spring break program and more events for the fall.
