Capt. Soularcat is not a naval officer, nor a feline – it’s a band with real “soul.”

For these musicians it’s all about having fun while expressing their passions.

While the name has no particular meaning, bassist/ vocalist Scott Warren said it came to him in a dream.

“It’s our spiritual guide,” said Warren, laughing on the phone while sitting in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon visiting the graves of Allman Brothers Berry Oakley and Duane Allman.

The blend of Southern rock and blues will be heard at Georgia Theater tonight.

The bands inspiration comes from each individual musician.

For instance, Malhotra brings Santana world music flavor, Shanks said. And each of the five band members have a different musical background and interest.

Occasionally, the band will add even more diversity when it has guest musicians play with it for a while.

The lead guitarist asked his best friend, Matt Williams, to join the band to help him get involved in the music scene.

Williams, who guitarist Benji Shanks said expresses a more “country-Americana vein” of music, sat in with. Soularcat for a year before leaving permanently to join the band Blueground Undergrass.

“Having two amazing guitar players in one band was great, but he had another opportunity to shine and wanted to also give Benji an opportunity to shine,” said publicist Seth Weiner.

Other band members include percussionist Gaurav Malhotra, Travis Cline on drums and Tony “G” Giardano on keyboard.
