Take it to the ‘House’ for hip-hop show
Hip-hop lovers staying in Athens for Spring Break have something to look forward to.
Tasty World is hosting the House of Hip-Hop, a traveling group of artists created in 2005 by Red Reign Entertainment, Saturday, March 18.
MSEIZE, Elemen O.P., Black Rose Dynasty and MindsOne will perform.
Red Reign Entertain-ment, based out of Atlanta, provides an opportunity for independent artists to travel to various cities and perform in different venues, said Kecia Ellick, co-owner of Red Reign Entertainment.

“It’s a concert series, not a tour. The event is touring, not the artists,” said co-owner of Red Reign Entertainment Jhibad Powell, also known as Rock Most while he’s on stage.
Powell is the host of the House of Hip-Hop and also performs with the group MSEIZE.
“The whole idea (of the House of Hip-Hop) is to allow people to perform outside of their element,” Powell said.
The show tries to stay away from anything “crunk” or “mainstream,” Ellick said.
“Some artists are like movie stars, but these artists are true to life,” Powell said about the performers at the House of Hip-Hop.
“They’re just artists expressing themselves,” he said.
The tour rotates 20 and 25 artists, taking them to such cities as Savannah, Columbia, S.C., and Chapel Hill and Wilmington, N.C.
Wilmington is home to one of the groups that will perform at Tasty World Saturday night.
Trey Smith, of MindsOne, said the group consists of himself and other emcees and DJs playing music and rhyming over it.
“There’s at least one song where we freestyle. We pick people out of the crowd to talk about, so they’ll know we’re coming up with it on the spot,” Smith said.
Elemen O.P., which stands for Element of Progression, is also performing, but its style is a little different than MindsOne.
It does hip-hop with live instrumentation – guitars, bass and drums – rather than turn tables, and it frequents the Athens music scene more than the other groups performing, said Nathan Phaneuf, the group’s bass player.
“We’ve played in Athens more times than I can count over the last four years,” he said.
Elemen O.P. joined with Red Reign Entertainment in the last few months and also recently released its first album.
At the Tasty World show, the DJs will keep spinning after the two-and-a-half hour show, so people can stay and dance, Ellick said.
