Bluegrass band teaming up with multiple genres
Depending on what time students decide to enter the Georgia Theatre tomorrow night, they will get caught in the middle of either a dance party, an Irish jig or a bluegrass hoedown.
Josh Erwin, from headliner the Packway Handle Band, called tomorrow’s show a “pimpin’ hoedown.”
Opening for Packway will be the Irish band Short Road Home and the six-piece hip-hop group Bling the Children Back Home. This will be the first time these three acts unite forces.
For the Packway Handle Band, this is the first time the group has made an appearance at the Georgia Theatre since its national tour. Members consist of Erwin (guitar and vocals), Zach McCoy (bass), Andrew Heaton (fiddle and vocals), Tom Baker (banjo and vocals) and Michael Paynter (mandolin and vocals).
Over the past few months, the Athens-based “vengeful bluegrass-ish” band has toured Tennessee, Colorado, Texas, Idaho, Montana and California and shared the stage with the banjo player from Hot Rize (Pete Wernick) and Donna Buffalo, among others.
“We’ve got a fifteen-passenger van, and I think we put about 12,000 miles on it,” Erwin said. “We hadn’t gone to California or Idaho before as a band, and a lot of the effort there was to break some new ground and make connections.

“I think overall it was a pretty successful tour. We’re going to return in mid-July to do the whole loop again.”
Now that Packway has moved its show on the road, band members quit their day jobs to focus their efforts on music.
The band hopes to lay down some new tracks in the summer and make moves toward creating another album.
The band’s second album, “Sinner,” was released in 2005.
“Right now we’re doing a lot more writing than recording,” Erwin said. “Michael has written four or five different songs recently, but none are performable yet.”
For tomorrow night’s concert, the band will perform songs from its album, a few newer songs and some covers.
“We learned a new Leonard Cohen song that’s a pretty exciting one. It fits the demeanor of the rest of the attitude that happens on stage,” Erwin said.
Erwin said he enjoys doing shows with bands of mixed genres.
“For New Year’s, we played with Dubconscious (reggae) and Grogus (Latin jazz),” he said. “Lots of the people that came to see us enjoyed seeing the other bands play and vice versa.”
Erwin said all Packway Handle Band members will partake in the dance party.
“Absolutely every one of us is going to be dancing,” he said. “I’m excited to wear my snakeskin shoes – they’re perfect for dancing, and all of us will be wearing our suits.”
When asked about dancing ability, Erwin said all members were lacking.
“Everybody moves pretty erratically,” Erwin said. “Andrew’s probably the best because he’s the most provocative.”
