Nelo, a band from Austin, Texas, moved to Athens in order to bask in the music scene.

This Athens-based band already has recorded one underground album, but it is in the process of recording an EP with about three to five songs on it.

The band is comprised of Matt Ragland (acoustic guitar), Redi Umstattd (singer), Mike St. Clair (bass), Chris Hill (drums), David Long (saxophone), and Stephen Goodson (electric guitar).

“The majority of the band is friends of mine from high school,” said Ragland. Ragland said he began writing songs in high school.

“Basically I got the only guys I knew to play music,” he said. “It just so happened they are really good.”

Hill, Long, Goodson and St. Clair all studied jazz at the University of North Texas Music School, according to Nelo’s Web site.

Ragland said he and Umstattd went to the University of Texas.

Ragland said the band’s music is similar to the Counting Crows or the Dave Matthews Band but said, “It’s hard to label yourself.”

However, he described the group’s music as acoustic-based rock.

Ragland said the band’s songs are fun and mostly positive.

He also said its shows are entertaining.

“Expect dancing, drinking and partying,” he said. “Our crowd gets us going.”

Ragland said the band plays at many places around Athens, including DT’s and Tasty World.

“More and more people are showing up,” he said. “We hope that continues.”
