Listserv used as online ‘flea market’

By on October 16, 2006

Anyone want a costume for Halloween? Price can be negotiated.

Or how about a used iPod?

And if you’re in the market, you can even be the proud owner of a bulldog statuette.

About four feet tall, wearing a red and black tuxedo, he comes bearing a serving platter with a gator head.

All these items and more have been hawked recently on the University’s virtual flea market, the UGA-Forsale listserv.

For shoppers with a keen eye and e-mail access, local automatic mailing services and Web sites can yield knick-knacks, bargains and some big purchases.

UGA-Forsale, for instance, has had postings for books, household items, vehicles, clothes and even houses, said Brenda Keen, one of the listserv’s administrators.

“A woman once offered (in jest, of course) to pay someone to take her teenager, but I don’t think she got any takers!” Keen wrote in an e-mail.

The listserv spews out at most 50 e-mails a day to its nearly 1,200 subscribers, said Keen, a member of the Staff Council’s Communications Committee, the official body in charge of the list.

Any University student or faculty member is welcome to join, but abiding by listserv laws is essential.

Repeat rule breakers are suspended from the list for six months.

Rules stipulate that the listserv only can be used to resell things acquired for personal use. In other words, the list can’t be used for private, money-making enterprises, such as real estate rentals, cosmetics, crafts, automobiles or garden produce, according to University Staff Council Web site.

Rules also say cats, dogs and other animals can be given away but not sold. Also, people are allowed only two posts per day.

Other etiquette, including directions for joining the listserv, is listed at http://www.uga.edu/ugasc/lists/index.html.

Alternatives to UGA-Forsale include a Yahoo! group, found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/uga-for-sale, running a classified ad in local newspapers, using the Tate Student Center’s billboards or checking the new site, www.dawgifieds.com.

UGA-Forsale is one of three listservs the University Staff Council runs as a service for the University. The other two are UGASTAFF, a forum for local events and University issues, and UGASC, for official notices from the Staff Council.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the market solely for football tickets, visit the UGA-Tickets listserv. Guidelines for that list are at http://suesmith.myweb.uga.edu/uga-tickets.html.
