SWIMMING AND DIVING  The women finished fifth at NCAA Champ-ionships in March.  Men’s and women’s swimmers charted NC AA-qualifying times in 15 events. TRACK AND FIELD  Jennifer Dahlgren was crowned Female Field Athlete of the Year.  Georgia women finished third, men fourth at the SEC meet in the spring, sending 17 members to the NCAA Championships.

Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in June, putting a cap on his 28th season at the helm in Athens.

“Being selected into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is an honor, but the real honor is coaching young people and teaching them how to be successful,” Landers said.

Tennis team wins fifth national championship

The 2007 Georgia men’s tennis team finished 32-0 and won its fifth national championship in Athens. The Bulldogs dominated each contest during the season, giving up only 13 points for the year. “The pressure starts creeping up,” said head coach Manuel Diaz.

Men’s basketball marred by off-season

The recent months have been up-and-down for the Georgia men’s basketball team.

Last season, the Dogs came into 2007 sporting an 8-4 record in non-conference action.

Georgia played well to start its SEC slate. The team hovered around .500 in conference play.

Gym Dogs repeat nationals win

The Gym Dogs captured their third consecutive NCAA National Championship this year, becoming the second program in NCAA history to capture at least three straight titles, joining Utah (1982-1986).

Game releases provoke fall hype

The most hyped game of the year, “Halo 3,” was finally released for Xbox 360. While it had new weapons and was balanced differently, what mattered most was the fact that the epic story was finally complete.

While the PlayStation 3 got some exclusive games, almost all of PS3′s exclusives were available for the Xbox 360, leaving gamers wondering why they should invest in a system with games they could get on a cheaper console.

Since my time with The Red & Black, I have spoken to Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Downey Jr. and Tobin Bell (Jigsaw) from the “Saw” movies – all because of college conference calls. After participating in four conference calls this semester, I have become a pro.
