Traveling ‘Jamfest’ brings summer festival feel
Students who miss the summertime concert experience this winter will have a chance to check out a traveling concert series designed to bring the feel of the outside summer concert season back to life during the cold winter months.
Winter Jamfest Tour 2007, presented by Terrapin Beer Company, will make Athens its sixth stop on a tour of 17 Southeast cities at the Georgia Theatre on Saturday.
“We are all big music fans,” said Dustin Watts, vice president of marketing and sales for Terrapin.
“Every winter, we found ourselves with just a beer in hand, no music,” Watts said. “So we decided to throw our own traveling winter festival in the comfort of southeastern theaters.”
“There’s a festival vibe to this event,” said Scott Orvold, event manager of the Georgia Theatre.
The “jamband-style” concert will include three promising young musician groups, Moonshine Still, Pnuma Trio and The Bridge.
“Each band is going to bring their musical flavor to the show, and stylistically, each band complements each other and are still distinct and innovative with their own music,” said G. Geller, manager of Moonshine Still.
Opening the show will be The Bridge, a young band from Baltimore.
“The Bridge has a unique sound which fuses blues, soul, groove and even bluegrass with modern elements of funk,” said Scott Forsyth, agent for The Bridge.
“Mandolin player Kenny Liner also is a master beat-boxer,” Forsyth said.
The second band playing, Pnuma Trio, is a group from Memphis, Tenn.
Pnuma Trio is a new addition to the electronic music scene where their music is a mix of classical, jazz, funk, hip hop, drum and bass influences, according to the band’s Web site pnumatrio.com.
“It’s instrumental, improvisational dance music for a new era in the live electronic realm, appealing to jam fans, hiphop heads and electronic dance party fanatics alike,” according to jambase.com.
Moonshine Still is the last band to take the stage before the final act, DJ Number Five.
“Moonshine Still’s music is electronic jamrock,” Geller said.
