Carter and Mondale recall interactions with foreign figure

By on January 19, 2007

Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines was quite of fan of President Jimmy Carter. Or Vice President Mondale, depending on whom you ask.

Carter and Mondale exchanged affectionate banter Friday evening at the Georgia Center a reception held in honor of Mondale and his wife Joan.

“I thought as president that I should be her favorite,” Carter said, to laughter. “No way. She adopted Fritz [Mondale] as her pre-eminent, I would say, non-sexual partner.”

But the “fact of it,” said Mondale, “was Imelda Marcos came to the White House five times to see the President.”

The reception was held at the end of the first day of the conference, allowing University faculty and students to mingle with members of the Carter administration.

Carter and Mondale have the longest post-presidency of any pair, Mondale said in a speech thanking Carter.

“And you know, we beat out Adams and Jefferson.”

University President Michael Adams gave Mondale an engraved glass bowl for his participation in the three-day conference.
