Band help present film

By on January 30, 2007

A mission statement without action amounts to little more than empty words.

Local band Dubconscious is out to make sure their statement isn’t made in vain.

The progressive dub/reggae group has teamed with the Georgia Theatre and Terrapin Beer to present a three-week movie series of provocative and educational films aimed at informing and educating the public.

WHY WE FIGHT

“I’ve worked with them for years now and developed a really good friendship. They’ve become family here,” said Theatre booking agent Scott Orvold. “We’re trying to create a fun environment that is productive.”

For Dubconscious, the films have been a way of continuing the mission they strive for with their music. Though the series serves as an opportunity to promote the band’s name, it’s clear that the members are in it for much more than publicity.

“Their whole vision and mission is completely unselfish,” Orvold said. “They’re doing this so they can enlighten people. They really just want to bring awareness to these films and the issues being addressed in these films.”

The first two film screenings, “An Inconvenient Truth” and “I Know I’m Not Alone,” have been great successes.

This week’s film is equally progressive and emotionally charged. Eugene Jarecki’s “Why We Fight” is an in-depth look at the “military industrial complex” – a phrase that inspired this film after it was famously coined by President Eisenhower in 1961.

“Why We Fight” won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, notching high praise for its insider documentation of the ideologies and costs behind the American war machine.

In its explorations, the bipartisan documentary includes deep research and commentary from notable public figures like John McCain, William Kristol, Chalmers Johnson, Gore Vidal and Richard Perle.

Though this miniseries is coming to a close, it represents the ongoing vision of a band with a progressive mindset.

“It’s really exciting to see them grow and grow in a way that is positive,” Orvold said.
