A position-by-position look at the ’07 class
The experts think Georgia did a pretty good job with its 2007 recruiting class.
The people at Rivals rank the Bulldog class No. 9 in the nation. And over at Scout.com, the Bulldog class is No. 17 in the country.
But how well did Georgia do filling its needs?
Sports staff writer Jamie Cwalinski breaks down Georgia’s class by position.
QUARTERBACK
With Matthew Stafford and Joe Cox cemented under center for the next couple seasons, Georgia’s need for an impact quarterback was minimal.
However, that didn’t stop the Bulldogs from a potential successor in. Logan Gray, a four-star prospect and Rivals.com’s No. 10 dual-threat quarterback. He possesses athleticism that will eventually get him on the field, even if not always at the QB position.
RUNNING BACK
In Greater Atlanta Christian tailback Caleb King, the Bulldogs landed the most decorated high school player in the state. If he can recover from a leg injury which sidelined him for most of last season and qualify, King – the No. 8 running back on Rivals.com – could work his way into the Georgia rotation immediately.
WIDE RECEIVER
With a plethora of young talent already at the position, Georgia went light on receivers this year. Nonetheless, the Bulldogs landed a physical playmaker in Israel Troupe, a Tifton native and four-star receiver. Gainesville’s Walter Hill originally signed to play basketball for Georgia, but opted for the gridiron instead.
TIGHT END
Aron White, the nation’s top-ranked tight end on Rivals, followed high school teammate Gray to Athens. White is the most highly acclaimed of Georgia’s class at his position and could help in replacing All-American Martrez Milner. Columbus’ Bruce Figgins (Rivals’ No. 17 tight end) also will add depth to the position so crucial to Richt’s offense the last few seasons.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Replacing a line depleted by graduations and dismissals was evidently the priority in this class.
The Bulldogs had five linemen signed before Wednesday, including four-star recruits Justin Anderson (who spent last season at Hargrave) and Trinton Sturdivant. By the end of Wednesday, eight linemen joined the Bulldogs, including All-American Chris Little, who decided to sign with the Bulldogs at the last minute. Georgia did lose Columbus-native and four-star Antwane Greenlee to FSU on signing day.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Georgia Military College transfer and four-star recruit Corvey Irvin could be in the mix to replace Quentin Moses and Charles Johnson.
Fellow four-stars Neland Ball and Justin Houston also are both top 20 end prospects. Defensive tackle Jarius Wynn signed early and was the only other significant addition up front.
LINEBACKER
Despite losing three seniors at the position, the Bulldogs were relatively quiet in restacking their linebackers. Snellville’s Rennie Curran was the biggest addition.
SECONDARY
After scoring several high profile recruits here last season, Georgia’s lone additions to the secondary were cornerback Vance Cuff and safety John Knox, both three-star recruits.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Peachtree Ridge punter Drew Butler will follow dad Kevin’s footsteps and play for the Bulldogs.
