Isner defeats the No. 2 ranked player as Bulldogs beat Tulsa
Unlike Austin Powers, John Isner knows who No. 2 works for.
In a match-up between two of the top three players in the country, No. 3 Isner easily defeated No. 2 Arnau Brugues of Tulsa by a 6-4, 6-1 margin as the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (10-0) rolled over the No. 23 Golden Hurricane (7-3) in a 7-0 rout.
“The conditions were pretty tough today with the shadows on the court, and I think (Brugues) struggled a bit. I was definitely more consistent than him today,” Isner said after picking up his 43rd straight win in dual-match play.
Coach Manuel Diaz said Isner maintained great focus, which allowed him to defeat an opponent of Brugues’ quality.
“John had to come ready to play,” Diaz said. “He played a great match, and he made Arnau work very hard. I told him to make Arnau earn everything, and John just didn’t make any unforced errors after that first set.”
As a team, Georgia started the match, winning the doubles point with an 8-1 victory from the pair of No. 1 Isner and Luis Flores and an 8-3 win from No. 42 Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg. Georgia has yet to lose the doubles point this season.
“It’s certainly given us a lot of momentum,” Diaz said of his team’s dominance in doubles so far.
Along with Isner’s win, Georgia picked up singles wins from No. 9 Flores, No. 13 Travis Helgeson, No. 20 Matic Omerzel, No. 57 Schnugg and No. 78 Hunt.
