Lady Dogs receive numerous awards

Ashley Houts was named SEC Freshman of the Year Tuesday, headlining a larger group of Lady Dog basketball players to be honored at the conference level.
The nod for Houts came just a day after the point guard received her fourth SEC Freshman of the Week award.
“I’m glad I could come in and make an impact,” Houts said.
“But I don’t consider us freshmen because we’ve had to play so much and contribute.”
Houts, who was tied in the SEC for minutes per game and total minutes, has a strong work ethic, according to her coach.
“She’s out here before practice and she’s out here after practice every day,” Georgia coach Andy Landers said of Houts.
“She’s committed to working hard and getting better. I think she feels the need to do that, but I think she enjoys doing it even more.”
Houts also was joined by classmates Christy Marshall and Angel Robinson on the SEC All-Freshman First-Team.
“I think through the course of the season, if not every week, we had a Freshman of the Week,” said junior Tasha Humphrey of her freshmen teammates.
“They’ve had a huge impact and they’ve had the ability to come out and play well in a tough league.”
Humphrey, a two-time All-American, was named to the All-SEC First-Team for third straight year, and she was joined on the All-SEC Second Team by senior Cori Chambers.
“It’s a big accomplishment, but everything I’ve won in my tenure here is because of my teammates,” said Humphrey.
“They’ve always done a good job of getting me the ball when I need it. It’s been like a big family, especially this year.”
In addition to the All-Freshman team, Marshall was also named co-SEC Sixth Woman of the Year, an award given to the best player off the bench.
She shared the award with Vanderbilt’s Liz Sherwood.
“Both of them are definitely honors,” Marshall said of her awards. “Just knowing that the coaches (who voted) noticed me coming off the bench and bringing energy to the court.”
The final accolade went to redshirt junior Rebecca Rowsey, who was dubbed Georgia’s representative on the SEC Women’s Basketball Community Service Team for the second consecutive year.
