Bulldogs drop second round NIT game to top team

By on March 20, 2007

Two days in the mountains of Colorado were not enough to prepare the Georgia men’s basketball team for the high altitude and high-powered offense of the Air Force Academy Falcons.

The No. 4 seed Bulldogs (19-14) fell into a deep hole in the first half of Monday night’s game and the top-seeded Falcons soared to a 83-52 win over Georgia in the second round of the 2007 Mastercard NIT.

The 31-point loss was Georgia’s worst of the season.

After the Bulldogs grinded out to a 5-4 lead early in the game, the Falcons went on a 21-3 run to create a 25-8 lead.

The Falcons (25-8) shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and 56 percent overall.

Air Force outshot Georgia from behind the arc as well, making 11 3-pointers compared to the Bulldogs’ six.

To make matters worse for the Dogs, the Falcons made 16 of their 17 free throw attempts.

Jacob Burtschi led Air Force with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the team’s leading scorer, senior Dan Nwaelele, added 19 points.

Sophomore Terrance Woodbury had his best game of the year for Georgia, leading the team with 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Woodbury was the only Bulldog to score in double figures.

In their last games for the Bulldogs, Levi Stukes scored nine points and Steve Newman added four points.

Early in the second half, Woodbury hit two 3-pointers to cut the lead to 16.

But it was not enough to slow down an Air Force offense that benefited from a sellout crowd in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Air Force will host DePaul in the quarterfinals of the NIT, while the Bulldogs’ season ends one win shy of 20 wins.
