CRIME NOTEBOOK

By on March 27, 2007

The following accounts were taken from University and Athens-Clarke County Police reports.

March 22

- A futon mattress caught fire in a Rutherford Hall dorm room.

Resident Assistant James Williams extinguished the morning fire before police and fire officials arrived.

No one was in the dorm room at the time of the fire.

ACC fire officials said the fire was caused by a lamp leaning against the futon mattress.

March 23

- ACC Police arrested Charles Bell Compton III and charged him with having an open container, underage possession and littering.

An officer saw Compton walk down West Clayton Street and throw a clear plastic cup he was carrying on the ground.

The officer approached Compton and determined there was still some alcohol in the cup.

- ACC Police arrested University student Lindsay Ann McDuff and charged her with underage possession of alcohol by consumption.

ACC Police were called by employees of The Grill after McDuff refused to leave when asked by employees.

She had her head on the table and was drooling when police arrived.

She refused to give her ID to the police at first but later provided her license, showing her to be 20 years old.

She told police she had been drinking earlier at General Beauregard’s.

- University student Ernest Wayne Satterfield reported to University Police he was robbed by two homeless men at gunpoint at the intersection of Waddell and Newton streets.

Satterfield told police he was walking home from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house when the two men pushed him down, pulled his jacket over his head and put a gun to his head.

He said one man asked what he had on him while the other reached into his pocket and took out his $100 Motorola cell phone.

They then fled the area, he said.

Satterfield told police he did not actually see a gun; he only felt a “hard object” on the back of his head.

His clothing did not appear to be dirty.

Police canvassed the area but did not make any contact with the two suspects.

March 25

- A University student reported to ACC Police that her 2000 Silver Mazda Protege had been broken into on East Dougherty Street.

The rear passenger window was broken, and her $150 CD player was taken.

March 26

- ACC Police issued University student John Lindsay a ticket for “failure to yield” after he was struck by a University Police car.

Lindsay told The Red & Black he was riding his bicycle west on Williams Street approaching its intersection with Bon-Cam Street.

The police vehicle stopped at the sign and continued to move, he said.

Lindsay, who said he thought the driver would stop longer, was struck as he crossed the intersection and fell off his bike, injuring his knee.

“My bike got pretty trashed, too,” he said.

ACC Police were called to the scene.
