Freshman pitcher works on consistency

By on March 28, 2007

For a freshman with only seven starts to her name, Kate Gaskill has seen just about everything this year.

The highs have been extremely high.

On Feb. 18, in her first home start, she mowed down 15 Western Kentucky batters on her way to throwing a no-hitter

“Coming in, I didn’t know how much playing time I would get,” Gaskill said.

“But I think I really progressed (in the off season) and the coaches have had a lot more confidence in me.”

But when her control is off, as it was on Saturday against No. 22 Florida, she has looked like, well, a freshman.

In 2.1 innings against the Gators, she was charged with 14 runs including seven earned and walked five batters.

It was the most runs ever given up by a Georgia team.

And in her first career start, on Feb. 10 at Louisiana-Lafayette, she walked a season-high 10 batters.

“Before the (Florida) game, I was doing well in the bullpen, but something happened before the start to take me off of my game,” Gaskill said.

“I need to do a better job of taking what I do in the bullpen and carrying it over to the field.”

But in between that pair of particularly rough outings, the Murrieta, Calif. native has settled nicely into her role as the Bulldogs’ third starter.

“That was her first SEC start,” senior pitcher Kasi Carroll said.

“You’ve got to realize she’s going up against the best hitters in the nation now. But she grew up a little bit (on Saturday). It’s something that happens to all pitchers.”

When she is throwing strikes, Gaskill has been nearly untouchable.

Her .157 batting average against and 1.42 strikeouts per inning lead the team, including Carroll, an All-SEC performer.

“She’s a really good strikeout pitcher,” Carroll said. “She can really smoke it in there. I’m just amazed at how hard she throws sometimes.”

Gaskill will get her first shot at rival Georgia Tech this afternoon.
