DJ’s minimal style available at Go Bar
Every Monday at Go Bar, Jena Paradies plays a type of techno called minimal house, which he said makes people want to chill.
“It’s more of a relaxed night. It’s not about dancing as much,” said Paradies.
JENA PARADIES WEEKLY TECHNO
When: 10:30 tonight
Where: Go Bar, 195 Prince Avenue
Price: TBD
Jena Paradies is the DJ name of Cornel Novac, a second year international affairs graduate student from Athens, who has been deejaying at Go Bar since November 2005.
Originally from the Eastern European country of Moldova, Novac was traveling in Germany in 2002 when his train stopped at a station in the town of Jena called Jena-Paradies.
Paradies said he found the minimal house genre to be underrepresented in the South, even as a niche genre, and decided to use it at Go Bar.
At first, Paradies said he played more dance-friendly music to engage the audience.
“That only got so far,” he said.
Paradies began to play what he said he thought audiences needed to hear and the crowds have been coming back every Monday since.
He said he describes minimal house as an evolving genre that is not as high energy as most dance genres and features a lot of bass and heavy beats.
He said it requires a different ear to appreciate minimal house than typical dance techno.
Paradies said he plays most of the mixes on the Internet and has recorded some of his own. One of his mixes was featured on a popular Internet blog called “DJs Anonymous.”
Go Bar on Mondays is the only place to hear Paradies play.
“As a master’s student, once a week is all of the time I have,” he said.
Paradies said he promises anyone who comes to Go Bar will hear music designed for dancing that won’t leave the ears ringing for days.
“It’s as great to listen to at home as it is on the dance floor,” he said.
