Softball secures position in SEC tournament

The Georgia softball team won the fight for its postseason life in a big way over the weekend, sweeping a three-game series at Arkansas to ensure the team a spot in the SEC Tournament.

The Bulldogs (41-24, 11-14 SEC) swept the Lady Razorbacks (20-41, 5-20) in Fayetteville for the fourth consecutive time.

Senior pitcher Kasi Carroll induced a ground ball from Jessica Bachkora with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of Sunday’s series finale to wrap up the Bulldogs’ fifth straight victory.

Center fielder Kellie Middleton singled home fellow senior Charvi Greer in the top of the seventh for the eventual winning run.

Catcher Melissa Wood then pushed Middleton across with a double through the right side to give Carroll and the team some insurance.

Georgia erased a three-run deficit in the fifth inning, thanks to an Arkansas error and a pair of RBI singles from Middleton and Greer.

Carroll picked up her third complete game victory of the week, allowing three runs on four hits in the 5-3 win.

She had an even better outing in game one on Saturday, throwing a two-hit shutout that the Bulldogs took by a 5-0 final.

Megan McAllister’s hit in the first scored Middleton from second.

Sophomore Christie Hamilton got the win in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader.

In addition to pitching all seven innings of the 7-2 Georgia win, Hamilton drove in a couple of runs on a third inning single to center field.
