Student in custody after confronting police with handgun
A University student, considered a threat to himself or others based on the statements of a faculty member, was taken into custody Monday night after confronting University police with a handgun when they came to his apartment to execute a search warrant, according to an e-mail issued to students and faculty Tuesday.
The e-mail stated that MBA student Brandon Ginyard, 27, “was disarmed and taken into custody under a court order requiring that he submit to mental evaluation. Pending the determination of whether he will be held for further mental treatment, he also will face two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.”
University spokesman Tom Jackson said Ginyard will not return to the University as the result of his arrest. He was two weeks away from receiving his master’s degree, but university officials said Wednesday he will not graduate from UGA.
”The police will seek to bar him, so he won’t be back on campus in any case, whether he is held for further evaluation or arrested,” Jackson said.
Police went to Ginyard’s apartment Monday evening and had to get a key from the apartment manager to let themselves in after no one answered the door.
Once inside, Ginyard confronted them with a pistol but the officers convinced him to drop the weapon, police said.
The e-mail warning was sent in accordance with the Clery Act, an act that requires institutions to give timely warnings of crimes that represent a threat to the safety of students or employees.
