On Wednesday nights, Athenians can enjoy eclectic, acoustic music while sipping on half-priced bottles of wine and enjoying a warm summer breeze.

Since the beginning of the year, The Melting Point has been hosting “Uncorked and Unplugged” nights to focus on singers and songwriters and their music at its barest.

“It’s basically an eclectic mix of singer/songwriters from around the country and stripped down versions of their songs,” said Ken Will Morton, the host of the series.

“It all comes down to the beauty of the song and presenting the song in that form,” he said.

Morton is no stranger to singing and songwriting himself with three albums under his belt and tours with Edwin McCain and Sugarland.

The idea for these special nights came from The Melting Point’s manager and booking agent, Troy Aubrey.

“He’s a local fixture force that manages a lot of bands and has an active role in the Athens music scene,” said Morton. “He knew I liked getting up on stage and making a fool of myself.”

The Melting Point seems to be the perfect venue for these acoustic shows, he said.

“They gutted this old mill with really high ceilings, and it has almost like garage doors, so you sit on the patio, and the breeze wafts through the venue, and you have that outdoor feeling,” Morton said.

Morton hosts the show by introducing the acts, getting the audience pumped up and also playing music himself.

Each week, different featured performers appear.

This Wednesday, The Melting Point will bring Nathan Beaver, Nick Light and Mary Bragg together for the “Uncorked and Unplugged” show.

Beaver has released two albums and is set to play shows in Atlanta after his upcoming Athens performance.

Light is busy promoting his sophomore album, “The World Forgetting by the World Forgot,” slated for release this fall. The title comes from a poem by Alexander Pope.

Light said the new album differs from his first one, “The Absent Parade.”

“It is more of an observation of the status quo rather than being so inwardly focused, which I like,” said Light. “Overall the record is my description of questioning your own sanity when growing into maturity.”

Influenced by Blink-182 at a young age and later Elliot Smith and Bright Eyes, Light said his music is definitely lyrically like these artists.

“The songs often carry with them a descriptive daydream or a picture from my memory,” Light said.

Mary Bragg has memories of The Melting Point back when it was The Foundry because she had her first CD release party there.

“I had a great show there, and then a couple years later after I moved to New York City I returned to Athens for a gig to open for the country music singer Miranda Lambert,” said Bragg.

“This chick musician is excited to bring her honed talent back to the Classic City and share what she’s learned about music, life and hardships.”

Bragg said she receives musical inspiration from all facets of life, including the subway, existential dilemmas and philosophy.

All three musicians are promoting their new albums, tours and writing new music, including Morton who has an album with his band in the works.
