Year’s noteworthy crimes recapped

By on May 1, 2007

Several major events made the police records this spring. Here is a follow- up:

Cause of missing student’s death remains a mystery

University Police are waiting on a toxicology report to determine the cause of death of a doctoral student who was found after missing for two weeks.

Yongsheng Li was found in a retention pond March 25 between the Women’s Sports Complex and the State Botanical Gardens on South Milledge Avenue.

University Police have concluded the investigation and are waiting on toxicology reports to close the case, said University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson. No foul play is suspected.

Fake ID ring still in circles

The Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s office has not set court dates for the 13 University students arrested on fake ID possession and distribution charges in late March.

University Police were alerted to the situation by a U.S. Postal Inspector who found a shipment of fraudulent IDs mailed from the University in February.

Greeks go wild at formals

Members of two fraternities had run-ins with the Tybee Island Police and members of one sorority made a mess of the Greeks’ relationship with Campus Transit.

Eight members of Chi Phi and five others were arrested and charged with underage possession during their formal on April 15.

Tybee Island Police Maj. Chris Case confirmed 11 members of Kappa Alpha were arrested in April, but the police reports were not available at press time.

Campus Transit decided to no longer rent buses to any Greek organization this semester after members of Alpha Delta Pi sorority vomited and urinated on University buses during the 45-minute ride to and from the sorority’s formal in Greensboro.

Campus Transit is still deciding whether it will offer charter bus service to Greeks in the fall.
