Lady Bulldogs fourth in nation

The 2007 women’s tennis season was brought to an end as the women fell to California in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals on May 20 to end the season ranked fourth in the nation.
The season began with only three returning starters and a ranking of 24th in the nation.
But successful play from Natalie Frazier and others proved to be enough to finish the regular season 24-1 with the only loss coming to SEC foe Auburn.
The women then went on to clinch the SEC title and make their 20th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament held in Athens.
Head coach Jeff Wallace was pleased with the team’s performance this season. “This has been one of the best seasons we’ve ever had at UGA,” said Wallace.
Wallace, who is currently running an all-girls tennis camp at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, also added to this year’s accomplishments by being named the 2007 SEC coach of the year.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association awarded Natalie Frazier, Darya Ivanov and Yvette Hyndman All-American honors for the season.
Frazier, a graduating senior, was named Most Valuable Player of the SEC tournament.
She will continue her tennis career this summer as a professional.
“I plan to play on the WTA tour. I plan to come back and finish my degree in accounting this year and then continue to play on the tour,” Frazier said.
Wallace makes sure to point out that it was a team effort.
“We beat Florida twice, beat Georgia Tech, had incredible honors, and were SEC champs – there’s a lot of good things about the season,” Wallace said.
Frazier echoed those same season accomplishments.
“It was memorable because not only did we beat one of our rivals, we won the SEC race,” Frazier said. “The team had never accomplished that in the past four years. It really meant a lot to finally accomplish that goal.”
While Frazier will not be returning, Wallace is confident in the remaining players and incoming freshmen’s abilities.
“A great group is coming back and every year is a new year,” said Wallace.
