Ashford hosts live concerts on lawn

By on June 28, 2007

As observed by a regular concert-goer, it seems that crowded, uncomfortable venues are the norm for live music concerts these days.

Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast’s landscaped five-acre site offers live music fans a relaxing change in atmosphere with its seventh annual “Concerts on the Lawn” outdoor series.

“It’s an unconventional venue,” said Dave Shearon, Ashford Manor co-proprietor. “It’s like going to the park and having a concert.”

CONCERT ON THE LAWN

When: 1st & 3rd Monday of month
Where: Ashford Manor Bed & Breakfast
More Information: Ashford Manor, 706-769-2633
Price: $12 for adults, $5 for
children 6-12

The event opened this year on May 7 with local favorite Rack of Spam. A diverse collection of bands fit the bill for the remainder of the series including, The Packway Handle Band, Zydefunk, Common People Band, Modern Skirts and The Wildcats.

Located in downtown Watkinsville, the quaint bed and breakfast, deemed “the best kept secret in Georgia,” offers local residents of all ages a chance to relax and enjoy live music with friends and family on summer and fall evenings.

With scenery comparable to Chastain Park in Atlanta, guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnics, beverages of choice, blankets and “whatever makes you comfortable,” Shearon said.

The outdoor venue boasts terraced lawns, tiki torches, candles, seating under the sunset and stars and, of course, live music.

Dondero’s Kitchen provides themed, prepared meals for the event for those who prefer creative convenience over cooking.

The cuisine for Zydefunk on July 16, for example, will offer a distinct Cajun flavor in accordance with a distinct Cajun sound – crab cakes with cocktail sauce, red beans and rice and an artichoke remoulade.

“It’s a big party that happens to have some music at it, and happens to be in Watkinsville. It’s a lot of fun,” Shearon said.
