Pearlene combines classic rock, chill beats on new CD

By on June 28, 2007

A preacher on the radio is just one of the reasons guitarist/vocalist of Pearlene, Reuben Glaser, said the song “High and Dangerous” as one of his favorites on their newest CD “For Western Violence and Brief Sensuality.”

The almost 10 minute song ends with the sound of a radio preacher being picked up through Glaser’s amp.

“I remember the feel in the room that night. You could tell people were playing together,” Glaser said.

PEARLENE CONCERT

Where: Caledonia Lounge

The band is made up of Reuben Glaser, Jesse Ebaugh, Andy Jody and Andrew Higley. Their live shows also include Beth Harris and Kristen Kreft.

The first song on the album, “The Shot,” offers up mellow harmony and a story-like feel. The lyrics seem well thought out and work with the melody.

On the heavier side, “We All Get Off” starts with a fast beat, slows it way down and then picks up again for more of a rock tone.

Chill beats make up the CD, and it has the welcome, unpolished feel of a classic rock band.

Glaser said the band was involved in the entire process of making this CD, “from writing to producing, to doing the artwork.”

Pearlene showcases their newest release, for their first time playing in Athens, on Friday at Caledonia Lounge.

The band began with a blues and acoustic feel but with the addition of drums and electric instruments evolved into a more classic rock sound.

“We’re not just playing the same songs every night,” Glaser said.

Pearlene continues their tour through South Carolina and Florida before coming back to The Earl in Atlanta on July 2.

“You can expect honest emotion, you can expect to hear a kind of sound you don’t normally hear. Loud, emotive rock with an element of harmony,” Glaser said.
