University road closures part of summer growth
Throughout the summer, the University has been improving roads on campus.
Sponsored by Athens-Clarke County, the construction on Lumpkin Street has included the milling and repaving of the roadbed from its intersection at Baxter Street to Lumpkin’s crossing of Broad Street.
The county also worked on the drainage infrastructure on Baxter and Hull Streets.
Baldwin Street is also closed from Lumpkin Street to Sanford Drive for the beginning of July in order to work on the sewer lines going into Park Hall.
According to a University news release, Baldwin Street should be closed through July 6, and construction should be completed by July 27.
The summer construction has caused several road closings, including Baldwin Street, and parts of Lumpkin, Hull and Baxter Streets, forcing many Athens drivers to change around their routes.
For those experiencing inconveniences, don’t worry – the work will be ending soon.
In the meantime, the Campus Transit System had to change its paths in order to avoid Baldwin and Lumpkin Streets, leaving the Park Hall stop out of its route.
One of the reasons construction is done during the summer is the reduced number of students on campus. According to Lindsay Hildebrandt, a senior and a transit system bus driver, it is better for construction to go on during the summer rather than during the fall or spring semesters.
“It is really more of an inconvenience to the passengers,” Hildebrandt said. “Some get confused about which stop to go to or where to get off because they aren’t sure what the new routes are.”
The detours have not only been frustrating for bus riders, but for drivers on campus as well. The detour signs give alternate routes to drivers attempting to drive across campus.
“I have to go out of my way around the detours,” said Rachel Milner, a junior from Atlanta. “It almost made me late for my doctor’s appointment.”
Although many consider the detours to be irritating, the construction will be done before the fall semester, providing newly paved roads for all drivers.
