Over the summer, two University colleges and one University school selected new deans. The Terry College of Business, the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources all selected new leaders.

The Terry College of Business’ dean began his work at the University July 1.

“My first goal as dean is to learn as much as I can about the Terry College of Business and the University of Georgia,” said Robert T. Sumichrast in an interview with The Red & Black this summer. “I want to talk with students and alumni . and develop a strategy with everyone’s help.”

Sumichrast came to the University from Louisiana State University, where he was the dean of the E. J. Ourso College of Business from 2003 to 2007, according to a University news release. He also worked at Virginia Tech for 19 years.

Sumichrast said he accepted this position because he said the school is “already a great college,” but he “saw tremendous potential for improvement in the Terry College.”

He said he hopes to communicate well with Terry’s students.

The College of Family and Consumer Sciences selected Laura Dunn Jolly as its new dean. Jolly, who was hired June 26, will take office Wednesday.

Jolly was a professor at the University of Tennessee, at the University of Kentucky and at Oklahoma State University, according to a University news release.

“The College of Family and Consumer Science has achieved huge amounts of success in the past,” said Denise Horton, the college’s director of communications.

“I think Dr. Jolly will continue to build on those successes.”

Horton said increasing the number of students in the college’s programs and raising money for a new building are among Jolly’s goals

Along with Jolly, Michael L. Clutter will assume his job as dean of The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources Wednesday.

Clutter has many ties to the University. Not only did his father work for the school of forestry for 20 years, Clutter graduated from the Warnell school’s graduate and doctoral programs.

“Dr. Clutter has a lifetime relationship with UGA and an enviable record of accomplishment in both industry and academia,” Adams said in a news release issued by the University.

“Having recently named two deans from outside the campus to posts in the Terry College of Business and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, I am glad to find an equally capable person within our own ranks . I believe Dr. Clutter to be an outstanding choice.”

At the University, Clutter has researched the monetary side of forestry, according to the news release.

Clutter has also held jobs in the business world. He worked in management positions with Pacific Corp. and Union Camp Corp., two forest product companies.

“(He) brings a broad and diverse background of expertise and experience from the private and academic sectors to the leadership role of dean of the Warnell School,” University Provost Arnett Mace spoke about Clutter in the news release.

“His demonstrated excellence in instruction in the Warnell School and the Terry College, and his experience in research, public service and interaction with the school’s many constituents, will serve him well in his new role.”
