DON’T MISS: Athens 411 Week

By on August 16, 2007

The history of Athens’ music scene is well-documented. What’s not always so well known, however, are those that work hard to preserve the legacy and see that it presses forward for future generations. Athens 441 is one such organization, dedicated to promoting our local scene through live shows recorded at the Morton Theatre downtown. Named for the digital sampling rate of CD technology (44.1 kHz), Athens 441 reminds people that R.E.M., The B-52′s, and Pylon aren’t all that Athens music history has to offer- they were just the beginning of a legacy that continues. This week (retroactive to Tuesday) is “Athens 441 Week,” a showcase of current local talent to celebrate a wrap on the second season of 441 recordings. The Morton, one of Athens’ most historic buildings, seems a fitting place for these younger bands to make their marks on the local scene, and the bands slated to appear encompass almost much every genre that the Classic City has to offer: Nutria, MCoast, Kimberly Morgan, Dancer vs. Politician and Jesse Flavin are just a few of the names who will grace the Theatre’s stage. Do it for the Athens history, or just do it for the great bands you’ll see this weekend. Either way, make your way down to the Morton Theatre on Washington Street for what’s left of this celebration of all things Athens music.
