LSU player joins Bulldogs

Porsha Phillips, a 6-foot-2-inch forward from LSU, will transfer to play under Hall of Fame Lady Dogs coach Andy Landers following her freshman season, the team announced last week.

Phillips, who was a prep All-American at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, played in all 38 games for the Tigers last season and will be eligible to practice but not play in games in the upcoming season.

Coach inducted into Hall of Fame

Former Georgia track and field coach John Mitchell (1990-1999) was named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association’s Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Mitchell led the Georgia women’s track and field team to an SEC championship in 1995 and led the men’s team to five top-10 men’s finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Diamond Dogs shine in summer

Diamond Dog Trevor Holder earned Playoff Most Valuable Player honors Tuesday, throwing a eight-inning one-hitter to help the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox win the Cape Cod Summer League title. Holder allowed just three runs during the entire regular season. Bulldog teammate Gordon Beckham also led the CCL with nine home runs and 35 RBI while with the Red Sox.

First baseman Rich Poythress showed his skills with the Thomasville HiToms over the summer, leading the Coastal

Plain League in RBI, total bases, walks and slugging percentage. He finished the season with a .324 batting average.

Upcoming Dogs medal in Bangkok

Upcoming freshmen Kelsey Ditto and Lauren English both medaled at the World University Games in Thailand. Ditto took bronze in the women’s 800-meter freestyle and the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle, while English was part of the women’s 400-meter medley relay team that took silver.
