Opulence celebrates relocation and fall season
Sometimes, walls must be torn down in the name of fashion.
Opulence, a women’s clothing boutique, is celebrating its new downtown location and the coming fall fashion season with a wine and cheese party.
Located in Five Points for three years, the store made the move at the end of March, said manager and University fashion merchandising graduate Carly Sinclair. A 10-week period of construction preceded its reopening.
“We felt like our base clientele is college students and young adults and everyone is already coming downtown,” Sinclair said. “It would be more convenient for everyone.”
Also with the new location, the store also can claim a better space.
“We were in a house in Five Points, so the clothes were a little more broken up [in the rooms] and it wasn’t like a complete unified feel,” Sinclair said. “We wanted to change that Here we have a more open, flow-y feel.”
Though the renovated shop boasts an appearance in keeping with its name, some of its most beautiful and noteworthy characteristics arose through destruction.
For instance, the unexpected exposed-brick wall that lies on the far left of the store came into being after the layer of sheetrock covering it was torn down.
“We saw the beautiful cedar beams and recognized how beautiful [the brick wall] was and we wanted to leave it exposed,” Sinclair said.
The ceiling also was torn down, leaving hardware and piping in full view and lending the store a lofty, vaulted feel.
“We decided to paint it black because it’s one of our signature colors,” Sinclair said. “It’s also kind of a void that adds to the height of the building.”
The walls, painted a pretty and unassuming blue, also retain Opulence’s signature color scheme.

Even the current window display celebrating the back-to-school season utilizes the new location’s resources. It features enormous stacks of handsome hardcover books and vintage school desks.
“There’s a beautiful library in the back of the building,” Sinclair said. “It belongs to the owners of the store we rent from.”
“One was a law professor’s and one was a marketing professor’s, so there’s like a little secret in the back of the store,” she said. “All those books are theirs.”
The upcoming party will premiere new clothing lines the store will carry, as well as Mike Ufry’s DJ debut. Ufry is the secret library/shop space owner.
Those in attendance can register for the chance to win a $150 shopping spree at Opulence, or other prizes such as Cosabella underwear.
The store currently features the clothing lines Ben Sherman, Sweet Pea, Goldsign, Ingwa Melero and Three Dot.
With an emphasis on dresses, Opulence’s prices vary between $75-$250, though Sinclair conceded that some exceed this range. Basics and tops are priced $100 and under.
