Professor examined by Univ.

By on August 22, 2007

No decision has been made concerning University professor Shuzhou Wang, but University officials are conducting an internal review after his arrest for threatening Cedar Shoals officials Thursday.

Wang said he “might kill someone in the county” at an annual parent-teacher meeting concerning his autistic 17-year-old son.

He remains in jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

“We do consider this a serious matter and are looking into it,” said Cynthia Hoke, director of news services for the University.

“It’s hard to say when a resolution will be made.”

Cedar Shoals High School Principal Tommy Craft said faculty have had many meetings with Wang, but none have “risen to a dangerous situation” in the past.

“He became upset and frustrated when it was obvious that the school wouldn’t meet one specific demand of service for his child,” Craft said Tuesday.

Craft would not elaborate on the demand.

“He said he wanted to kill someone in the county, and we took that to mean a county official,” Craft said.

He added Wang made eye contact with a specific teacher when he made the threat.

Wang is not allowed to return to Cedar Shoals.

Teachers suspected Wang of abuse on three separate occasions during the last school year in August, April and May after his son arrived to class with bruises.

A caseworker from the Clarke County Department of Family and Children’s Services filed a separate complaint of battery and cruelty to children to Athens-Clarke County Police in October 2006.

Investigations never produced evidence for charges or an arrest, according to Detective Jerry Saulter.
