Students to find employment around campus at Univ. fair

By on August 22, 2007

The Student Employment Fair will be held today in the Georgia Hall of the Tate Center from 10 a.m. — 2 p.m.

The 6th annual event is “a fair designed for on-campus departments as well as local businesses seeking part-time student help,” said Scott Williams, executive director of the Career Center.

Last year, the fair hosted more than 1,000 students and 40 different companies and on-campus departments. This year, they will have approximately 60 potential employers for students to talk with, said Williams.

“[The fair] is a great way for students to identify many options for part-time employment in one day. They can shop around with more than 60 different organizations,” said Williams.

Michael Floyd, director of Food Services, said that his department will be represented at today’s fair.

“It’s a great way to recruit student employees and to not only provide them with an opportunity to earn some money in college but also to participate in a student management program,” said Floyd.

He added that on-campus student employment can lead to other opportunities in the future.

“There are many people that start off in jobs on the University campus, and they end up making a life long career in these departments based on their first encounter as a college student,” he said

Meredith McDonald, a senior from Illinois, has attended the employment fair for the past three years and has worked for several different on-campus offices – most notably the Georgia Review, where she was nominated for the Student Employee of the Year award in 2007.

“Some of the best jobs and references later on come from working on-campus and getting involved in that way,” said McDonald.

“Especially coming from out-of-state, working on campus made me feel more aware of things on campus and much more involved.”
