Given Mark Richt’s record since coming to Georgia, few have questioned anything he has done as head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs.

However, one thing fans occasionally question is his play calling decisions. After losing four out of five games last season, Richt decided to let quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo call the plays against Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech in the Chick Fil-A Bowl.

With Bobo calling the plays, Georgia finished the season on a high note with wins against two top 25 teams.

So when offensive coordinator Neil Callaway accepted the head coaching job at University of Alabama – Birmingham, Bobo was an obvious choice to take over the role as well as continue calling the plays.

Since taking over, Bobo has revamped the playbook including a change to terminology used on the field.

“We’re out of a lot more sets and doing a lot of different things rather than just lining up and people knowing what we’re going to do,” said quarterback Matthew Stafford.

While the plays are intended to look different, most of Richt’s plays from last season still are being used. “It’s the same plays, just run out of a lot of different formations and motions. It’ll just look different,” said Stafford.

In addition to the terminology and formation, Bobo’s play calling takes more shots down field and in the passing game.

“I think Bobo likes to go deep more and with Stafford back there, he can make just about any throw,” said receiver Michael Moore.

“With the receivers we have this year, I think we can do a lot of big things.”

While no one seems upset with the change, no one seems happier than Stafford who is expected to get more control of the offense and what plays are run.

“It’s a little more on the quarterback and I like that,” said the sophomore from Dallas.

With Richt no longer calling the plays, he is able to focus more on his role as head coach and not worry about the week to week grind of calling plays.

“Now I’ll be much more up to speed on everything, because I won’t be spending as much time in the grind of the game plan,” said Richt.

Richt is still far from having an abundance of free time, but he knows the lighter load will be good for his health and the team.

“Me moving to this position will be very beneficial to my health and beneficial to the health of the program,” said Richt.

“It (the playcalling) was wearing on me. I now feel more revived and refreshed than I ever have since being at Georgia.”

While no one can be sure if the off-season moves will translate to wins, a refreshed coach and a happy quarterback couldn’t hurt.

When asked about his play calling strategies, Mike Bobo just smiled and said, “We’ll just have to see.”
