Ticket shares frustrate SGA

By on September 21, 2007

Student Government Association leaders voiced frustration about allocation of student tickets to the University Council Committee on Inter-collegiate Athletics Thursday.

SGA President Katy Bowers said full ticket packages should be given to full-time students because intercollegiate sports enhance the college experience for students.

“We want to make sure that college athletics stay at the college amateur level and that the fan base is representative of that as well,” she said.

Alongside Bowers was freshman Jake Lanier, who heads SGA’s ticket initiative, and Graduate Student Association Vice President Matt Gore.

Bowers addressed the committee, composed mainly of faculty and a few students, after Athletic Director Damon Evans left for other business. The Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Carla Williams told Bowers, Lanier and Gore that she would look into their concerns.

Before Bowers’ brief presentation, Evans spoke to the council about his goals for improving graduation rates of student-athletes. Evans discussed the success of the mandatory attendance policy, which fines student-athletes if they miss class.

After the third missed class, athletes are suspended for 10 percent of competition.

“We have eight or nine kids being suspended from competition because of academic reasons, but that is a very small number out of all our student-athletes,” Evans said.
