Band spreads blues in Athens
There’s a new band in town, and it’s bringing a sound that is otherwise underrepresented.
Blues Affliction will play at Tasty World tonight at 9:45.
Making its debut in a city known for its variety of music, the band offers a change in sound and is sure to be refreshing to Athens listeners.
“Blues is the root of all music,” said J. Hall, lead guitarist and vocalist.
Hall said most people will recognize elements of blues in other genres of music as well as in popular tunes.
“If you have never listened to the blues, you’re going to hear a familiar sound,” said Hall, a junior from Marietta.
“Somewhere along the line every artist has been influenced by the blues. Blues artists laid the groundwork for many types of music, which is why it is still a fresh and new sound today.”
Playing alongside Hall are Brandon Bradford on drums and John Belote, a junior from Marietta, on bass.
The trio said it feels a responsibility to deliver blues to its audiences.
“We are trying to give credit where it’s due,” Hall said. “There’s a great sense of history in the blues and a lot of legendary blues musicians have gotten phased out. We want to bring this music to people who have never heard it before.”
Hall has played in several other bands throughout his music career. However, he said of all the genres, blues is the one he is compelled to play.
“As a musician there’s a desire to play a type of music you love, and I want to bring the blues to as many people as possible,” Hall said.
“I think Athens is a great place to do this because of its diverse music scene. It’s a labor of passion for me. I love playing the blues.”
Blues Affliction made its first Athens appearance Sept. 21 at DT’s Underground.
The set list for tonight’s performance will include four original songs written by Hall. A new Blues Affliction CD will be available at the show as well.
